SALT DOUGH: THE RECIPE TO MAKE IT

Dearest hiamoms, here we are again talking about modeling paste for our children. Today I wanna tell you about salt dough and the recipe to make it. This type of malleable paste is totally non-toxic and easy to make, not to mention the fact the recipe is completely green.

We already know how important modeling dough is for our children’s manual skills’ development.  Salt dough… Have you ever heard about that? Then keep reading… you’ll love it!

Moreover, as you can see, all the modeling dough I presented you are non-toxic and green: we love our children and we want them to play safely with materials that are totally suitable for them.

In addition, the ingredients to make salt dough are cheap and always at hand in our kitchens. Therefore, dear moms lace up your apron and let’s see what you need to make the salt dough for your kids to play with.

Ingredients*:

*you can halve the doses or double them

  • 2 cups of salt up

  • 4 cups of flour

  • 2 cups of warm water

  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil (optional)

You can also add, as you like, food coloring to color your salt dough or even a few drops of essential oil to make it fragrant.

To make it more delicious, however, add cocoa powder, but be careful not to let your little champions eat salt dough.

Because, despite the delicious smell of chocolate, the taste of all that salt will not make the morsel delicious itself in spite of its good smell! ^ – ^

Method:

Put the salt and flour in a bowl and then add the water. If you use a liquid dye, add it to the water before pouring it into the mixture.

Mix by hand or with a Thermomix until your salt dough is soft and compact. The food processor will help you to obtain a more homogeneous mixture.

Warning: if the dough sticks to the fingers, add a little flour; if, on the other hand, it is too friable, add water.

Storage: if you do not use salt dough immediately after preparing it, you can wrap it in the plastic wrap and place it in the fridge.

After use, wrap it in a cloth and put it in an ziplock bag. In both cases you can store it for a maximum of one week.

PREPARE THE SALT DOUGH WITH A THERMOMIX

If you use a Thermomix you will need slightly different doses and some more advice on the procedure to be followed. Well, let’s go find out all of them!

Ingredients:

  • 350 gr of flour

  • 200 ml of water

  • 350 gr of salt up

Method:

First pour the salt into the food processor and grind it using speed 8 for about 20 seconds. In this way you will obtain a very fine salt, almost a powder.

Add water, flour and dye. Keep kneading for about 2 minutes and you’re done! Your soft and super-malleable salt dough is ready to use.

HOW TO DRY THE SALT DOUGH

Nicest thing about salt dough is you can also cook it.

After your children have made their creation, let it rest in a dry environment for 12 to 48 hours.

Then bake between 167° F and 230° F (depending on the size of the object) for about 2 hours. Or let it dry in the open air or on the radiator.

In this case the times are longer and your salt dough will be completely dry after about 3 days.

COLOR THE DRY SALT DOUGH

If you have not colored the salt dough in preparation, the children can paint it with watercolors or tempera colors once it has dried.

In this way they will keep the little object they created, which will become a beautiful memory of the time spent with their mom or with their little friends!

In order to preserve the salt paste object for a longer time, you can apply a coat of transparent and bright fixative paint suitable for children to preserve the creation from the formation of the flour butterflies.
